Nutrition gives way to ease in snacks at school

Over the year, Koch said, 6-year-old Nathan came home having eaten Pop Tarts, snack cakes and cookies parents provided as an afternoon snack at Eason Elementary School.

Koch's concern reflects what local and national nutritionists say is a tough balancing act for schools: Keeping youngsters healthy at snack time even though pre-wrapped, high-sugar treats often are cheaper for parents and easily meet school packaging requirements.

"It's an extremely tricky situation," said Beth Hanna, legislative chairwoman of the School Nutrition Association of Iowa and director of nutrition services for West Des Moines' schools. "I don't know if there's a simple answer to it."

Waukee school officials stress that they vigorously promote healthful foods in their lunches and tailor diet programs to individual students as needed.

The plants need over a foot in rainfall over the next month to stay in business, but there is no relief forecasted in site. Donna Lisenby, executive director of the Catawba Riverkeeper environmental group that tracks conditions Lake Norman and other lakes along the 225-mile Catawba River system, bemoans, "If we don't get at least 10 to 15 inches of rainfall in January, February and March, lake levels could be lower in the fall of 2008 than they were in 2007 -- and that could be a disaster." The Progress Energy Harris plant is currently at 218.5 feet, 3.5 feet above the legal limit. Progress officials say if the water dips below the limit, they will be forced to close and buy power from other sources. Duke's McGuire nuclear plant's lake dropped 4.5 feet since last year and only needs to drop one more foot to be below the legal limit, mandating closure. The TVA reactor at Browns Ferry in Alabama already shut down once in August 16, 2007 due to the discharged coolant being too hot. As reservoir temperatures rise, this is expected to become a much more regular occurrence.

Ask Amy: Don't wait on hubby to get help

Dear Amy: I have uncovered a fairly intense long-term emotional affair my husband of 18 years has been having with a coworker. I discovered work e-mails, cell-phone calls, text messages and personal notes. My husband and I have discussed this, and he assures me that he has discontinued the relationship. I have my doubts. His company has a no-fraternization policy. Following corporate protocol, I wrote to the woman on company e-mail and asked that she cease and desist any further personal/electronic contact with my husband. That was four months ago, and yesterday I discovered a Facebook "friend" request she sent to my husband's e-mail. There have been many breaches of my request. I am ready to send a second and last request to discontinue all contact with my husband, except for business-related matters.

Connect360 3.1

If you own an Xbox 360 and you have it connected to your home network, you should definitely take a look at Connect360 from Nullriver Software. This $20 software makes it possible to stream all of your Mac's (unprotected) audio, video and photos to the Xbox 360.

Not all of us Mac users have or even want an Apple TV, but many of us have invested in video game consoles to feed our gaming jones. The Xbox 360 is very popular with Mac users, and it's easy to understand why—there's a ton of great content. But the Xbox 360 is more than just a gaming machine—it can also play movies, music and view photos on your TV, and it can even connect to a computer, just like an Apple TV.

Microsoft, like Apple, is more focused on making its own hardware work well with its software, so it's no surprise that out of the box, the Xbox 360 can't communicate with the Mac.
